One of the most reliable treatments to restore missing teeth is with the help of dental implants. They are durable and among the longest-lasting, but they weren’t always like this. Before they boasted their many benefits and a high success rate, they evolved over thousands of years to become what they are today. Keep reading to take a peek into the past of how dental implants evolved to benefit you in the present day.

The Start of Dental Implants

As far back as 4,000 years ago, there was evidence of people using materials to replace missing pearly whites. Ancient Chinese carved teeth out of bamboo pegs that they would then hammer into their gums. Fast forward 2,000 years, and the Egyptians used precious metals. Ivory and rare gems, such as jade, were used as posts, but they couldn’t fuse properly.

Beginnings of Modern Dental Implants

From the 1500s to the 1800s, scientists used blends of gold and other metal alloys to make dental implants, but they still weren’t reliable options. It wasn’t until the 1900s that Dr. E.J. Greenfield made this tooth replacement option with 24-karat gold. His experiment was still unsuccessful, but Drs. Alvin and Moses Strock (two brothers) continued on his research and used Vitallium instead. This was a mix of cobalt and other substances that led to the first successful implant!

A couple of decades later, in 1952, Dr. Per-Ingvar Brånemark then laid the foundation needed for the modern-day version of this treatment. As he was studying bone healing and regeneration, he placed titanium into a rabbit’s femur and wasn’t able to remove it. The metal successfully fused with the bone, and it was discovered that this could lead to a higher success rate. Several years later, in 1965, he placed a titanium dental implant into one of his patients, and it proved to be fruitful!

Dental Implants Current Standings

By the 1980s, this tooth replacement option was seen to be widely accepted in dentistry. It continued to evolve and become the best it can be through high-quality materials and techniques. Combining titanium with other materials, like ceramic, leads to a lifelike restoration that feels and looks natural. Today, there are many studies being conducted that help ensure this treatment is the best it can be, ensuring greater functionality and results that last for decades to come.
